James Andrew Courter
NJN Foundation Board Jim Courter is President and Vice Chairman
of IDT, a leading facilities-based multinational telecommunications
carrier, telephone company and Internet service provider.
Mr. Courter was named President in September of 1996 and then
elected Vice Chairman of the IDT Board of Directors in 1999.
Jim Courter has had a highly distinguished career in government
and public services. He was appointed by President Bush in
1991 and re-appointed by President Clinton in 1995 to the
Cabinet-level position of Chairman of the National Base Closure
and Realignment Commission. As chairman, Mr. Courter was responsible
for overseeing the restructuring of the United States' domestic
military base infrastructure. Mr. Courter was a member of
the U.S. House of Representatives for twelve years, retiring
in January 1991. He represented the l2th Congressional District
of New Jersey and also was the Republican party's Candidate
for Governor in 1989. While serving in Congress, He was appointed
to the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Federal Holiday Commission.
Whether in the public arena or the private sector, Jim Courter
believes in and has dedicated a part of his life to volunteerism,
including service with the Peace Corps in Venezuela. In addition
to serving on the Board of Directors of the NJN Foundation,
Jim currently serves on the Board of Advisors for the Graduate
School of Management at Rutgers University and the Board of
Trustees for the Berkeley Colleges. Mr. Courter is an adjunct
professor at the New Jersey Institute of Technology and was
awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Humane A lifelong resident
of New Jersey, Mr. Courter holds a B.S. degree from Colgate
University and a Juris Doctorate from Duke University Law
School. Jim and his wife Carmen live in Hackettstown, New
Jersey. They have two daughters, Donica and Katrina.
